Autumn is here — and we’re continuing our cozy tradition of discovering great cinema from around the world, one Saturday afternoon at a time. 🍂🎬
This time, we’re heading to Brazil for City of God (Cidade de Deus, 2002) — a powerful, energetic, and visually unforgettable film set in the favelas of Rio de Janeiro. 🇧🇷
Following a group of young people growing up amid poverty, ambition, friendship, and violence, the film tells its story through a fast-moving, deeply human portrait of life in the City of God.
The film received four Academy Award nominations, including Best Director, Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Cinematography, and Best Film Editing. It also won the BAFTA for Best Editing and was nominated for BAFTA’s Film Not in the English Language award.
