Amsterdam city of ‘Stille Omgang’ and ‘Miracle of Amsterdam’

Did you know 750 years old Amsterdam has been a city of pilgrimage for centuries?

The First Supper invites you to experience the Amsterdam pilgrimage tradition first hand on the evening of 15th March.

What better moment to do so, on the evening of “Stille Omgang” an annual late-night procession walk in the historic heart of Amsterdam honoring the "Miracle of Amsterdam" that occurred in 1345, an event that turned Amsterdam into a destination of pilgrimage for centuries.

During this unique experience you will:

• Learn about the story of the Miracle of Amsterdam, including what brought 10.000’s of pilgrims to Amsterdam
• Arrive in their footsteps, walking the last few 100 meters into Amsterdam along the former Heilige Weg to the Heilige Stede
• Enjoy a nourishing pilgrim style supper at a historic venue (the fellowship room of Christchurch on Groenburgwal)
• Make new friends at our table like pilgrims do. Connect more deeply through conversation and inspiration about walk of life
• To prepare for the procession, experience a beautiful late night pilgrim tradition in the historic Christchurch chapel
• Icing on the cake: Walk and reflect in silence, as we conclude the evening walking the Stille Omgang together.

The concluding “Stille Omgang” walk and procession is a longstanding annual mid-March tradition attracting thousands of pilgrims from around the country who arrive by wheel and for quite a few still... by foot. Walking, praying, meditating as you wish in silence in the late Saturday evening busy Amsterdam centre is a special experience. During our walk we will pass by “Heilige Stede” and we may have the opportunity to shortly visit two very special “Schuilkerken”: in Begijnhof and the Papegaai.

This will be the second year The First Supper will host a “Stille Omgang” event. And this time: In the Amsterdam 750 anniversary year! This supper and event is a co-production by The First Supper and ChristChurch Amsterdam. You will be hosted in the historic Christ Church venue on Groenburgwal and warmly welcomed at The First Supper community table. This supper will be an opportunity to meet up with locals and visitors from all backgrounds and nations, to connect, share walk of life stories, and listen to what brings us as modern day pilgrims to Amsterdam.
