Makerspaces (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Makerspace) are an evolving trend in localised open source techlabs which is finding its way to New Zealand. They are the techie/IT version of neighbourhood Men's Sheds. There are active makerspace groups in Wellington (http://co-lab181.co.nz/) and Dunedin (http://dspace.org.nz/).
Makercrate (http://makercrate.org/) is an innovative Kiwi twist by encapsulating a Makerspace into a resilient transportable container space. Coming soon to Christchurch. Attend this week's Coffee n' Jam session to learn more and see some of the latest technology in action.
"A makerspace is a public space that brings people together in a shared learning environment, but this isn't any old learning environment. We're talking 3d printing, laser cutting and other marvellous cutting edge technologies."
