Meaningful World Peace- is it possible and desirable? How should we promote it?

Details
*Special Collab with Designing Open Democracy! *
War causes a lot of suffering over the years and to this day. It seems that we ought to explore if there are any possible alternatives to human relations other than military conflict, namely the possibility of a worthwhile global peace.
This is a discussion for people who might think both realistically and idealistically about the problem in general, and what could be done about it both internationally and locally, if anything. We may also go into the role of cosmopolitanism and nationalism, international order or anarchy, and the role of democracy
---
It is recognised that this topic is raised in the context of suffering for many due to war, so we expect all people who attend to be sensitive to other's possible personal views and experiences in putting forward their perspective.
The organiser comes at this from a perspective that we ought to limit suffering, whoever is suffering, and so we should do what we can to limit it in general.
