Sci-fi Book Group - Non-English Novels

A regular book group night to discuss sci-fi and expand our reading horizons! It's very informal, you don't even have to have read a book - just as long as you enjoy talking sci-fi and having a glass of wine (or coffee!)

This month we're reading anything (originally) not written in English.

Some suggestions:

Fables For Robots & The Cyberaid by Stanislaw Lem - two closely related, humorous science fiction collections by Polish author Stanisław Lem. Both books are set in a whimsical, cybernetic universe that reimagines classic folk fairy tales and fables.

Roadside Picnic by Arkady and Boris Strugatsky - A Soviet science-fiction novel by Arkady and Boris Strugatsky. It explores the aftermath of an enigmatic alien visitation on Earth. The aliens stayed briefly and left, scattering dangerous, gravity-defying, and incomprehensible artifacts across the planet in restricted areas known as "the Zones".

Gamedec Saga by Marcin Przybyłek - Set in a hyper-capitalist 22nd-century Warsaw, the GAMEDEC Saga follows Torkil Aymore, a private investigator who solves crimes occurring inside immersive virtual reality worlds. As the narrative progresses, his investigations evolve from virtual mysteries into a grand sci-fi conflict involving corporate wars, transhumanist ethics, and the fate of humanity.

The Three Body Problem by Liu Cixin - A hard science fiction novel that chronicles humanity’s first contact with an alien civilization and the existential threat that follows.

Join us to discuss what you've read, what you'd like to read and help us decide on some topics for the rest of the year.

The topic for our next book group might be a specific book, author or general topic like first encounters, robots, etc - we'll decide on the night depending on people's interests. Feel free to submit a suggestion in the comments below.
