A regular book group night to discuss sci-fi and expand our reading horizons! It's very informal, you don't even have to have read a book - just as long as you enjoy talking sci-fi and having a glass of wine (or coffee!)

This month we're reading science fiction horror.

Some suggestions:

Xeno by Nathan Kuzack - "The huge spaceship the Xeno is en route to a new world light years from Earth, its payload of more than 50,000 cryogenically frozen colonists watched over by a supercomputer and a skeleton crew of only a dozen people.
When the ship comes into contact with a seemingly inert alien artefact drifting in space, the crew believes they've made a momentous discovery for all humankind. They’re unaware it’s the eve of true horror."

Parasite Eve by Hideaki Sena - "Filled with scientific acuity and existential challenges in the tradition of Ghost in the Shell and Frankenstein, this medical fantasmagoria is a disorienting look into the consciousness and will have you questioning the future of human evolution."

Infected by Scott Sigler - "Across America a mysterious disease is turning ordinary people into raving, paranoid murderers who inflict brutal horrors on strangers, themselves, and even their own families."

Malevolent: Alien First Contact Science Fiction Thriller by E.J. Deen - "Elliott Grey refuses to believe. As a top-notch journalist for a Seattle-based magazine, he is trained to have an open mind. But he simply refuses to believe extra-terrestrials actually exist. After a disturbing interview with a man who claims to have been abducted by aliens, Elliott is plagued by nightmares of his own abduction. Terrorized and tortured by entities he cannot understand, Elliot has come face to face with his unbelief. He is a marked man, and he soon learns it is futile to run. There is no escaping the malevolent force that has targeted him. He can trust no one, no thing. Only himself."

Other honourable mentions:

  • The Body Snatchers by Jack Finney
  • Blindsight by Peter Watts
  • The Day of the Triffids John Wyndham
  • The Strain by Guillermo del Toro, Chuck Hogan

Join us to discuss what you've read, what you'd like to read and help us decide on some topics for the rest of the year.

The topic for our next book group might be a specific book, author or general topic like first encounters, robots, etc - we'll decide on the night depending on people's interests. Feel free to submit a suggestion in the comments below.

As always, you can join our chat room on matrix at #bookgroup:glasgow.social (if you don't already have access to matrix, you can sign up at https://glasgow.social/matrix).

This meeting will be held in The Gamer Club - there'll be free tea, coffee and wine, but feel free to BYOB too! There are some directions to the venue here: https://www.thegamerclub.co.uk/gettinghere
