Sci-fi Book Group - Halloween themed; witches, rituals and cults

A regular book group night to discuss sci-fi and expand our reading horizons! It's very informal, you don't even have to have read a book - just as long as you enjoy talking sci-fi and having a glass of wine (or coffee!)

This month we're reading science fiction horror (once again, but it's Halloween) - but we talked about focusing on books that feature witches, rituals or cults.

Some suggestions:

• The Deep Sky — Yume Kitasei
  A murder mystery aboard a generation ship explores fanaticism, secrecy, and the dangerous beliefs that develop inside an isolated society.

• The Women Could Fly — Megan Giddings
  In a near-future America where witches are real, a young woman navigates authoritarian control, surveillance, and the legacy of witch persecution.

• The Year of the Witching — Alexis Henderson
  A young woman living under a rigid religious regime discovers a forbidden form of magic that threatens to expose the dark foundations of her society.

• The Library at Mount Char — Scott Hawkins
  A bizarre group of adopted children raised by a near-omnipotent “Father” become entangled in a strange struggle involving gods, rituals, sacrifice, and unimaginable power.

• Last Days — Brian Evenson
  A detective investigating a bizarre cult whose members deliberately mutilate themselves is drawn into an increasingly disturbing and surreal conspiracy.

• The Master and Margarita — Mikhail Bulgakov
  When Satan and his supernatural entourage descend on Soviet Moscow, a mysterious witch, forbidden love, and religious satire collide in a gloriously surreal tale.

Join us to discuss what you've read, what you'd like to read and help us decide on some topics for the rest of the year.

The topic for our next book group might be a specific book, author or general topic like first encounters, robots, etc - we'll decide on the night depending on people's interests. Feel free to submit a suggestion in the comments below.
