Cold Sassy Tree is a classic 1984 novel by Olive Ann Burns, set in the fictional town of Cold Sassy, Georgia, in 1906, narrated by 14-year-old Will Tweedy as his grandfather, a recent widower, scandalizes the town by marrying a woman half his age. The story explores themes of coming-of-age, love, death, and small-town Southern life through a cast of quirky characters, with the titular tree symbolizing the town's defiance of convention. Burns also wrote an unfinished sequel, Leaving Cold Sassy, published posthumously.
