Woodworking by Emily St. James is a debut novel about an unlikely friendship between a 35-year-old trans high school teacher, Erica, and her 17-year-old trans student, Abigail, in a small South Dakota town around the 2016 election. The book explores themes of identity, community, and the challenges of being trans in a conservative environment, following the two as they navigate their personal journeys and form a bond, with Erica trying to be seen and Abigail seeking to disappear into normalcy ("woodworking"). It's praised as a witty, heartfelt, and important addition to transfeminine literature.
