What does it actually mean to age well?
As a health coach, one of the areas I'm increasingly interested in is healthspan—not simply how long we live, but how well we live throughout those years.
This session kicks off a new Healthspan Series, where we'll explore the many factors that influence our ability to stay healthy, capable, connected, and engaged throughout our lives.
We'll begin with an introduction to three interconnected pillars of healthspan:
Physical Healthspan — How well is your body equipped to keep doing the things you want it to do? This includes aerobic capacity, strength, power, balance and mobility, and bone and tissue resilience.
Emotional Healthspan — What supports your ability to remain connected, engaged, resilient, and psychologically well? This includes social connection and belonging, purpose, meaning and values, positive psychological well-being, and adaptive resilience and recovery.
Clinical Healthspan — What can your health information tell you about protecting your future health? This includes cardiovascular and metabolic health, kidney and liver health, bone health, hormones, cancer prevention and risk, preventive care, and clinical safety.
This session is just the starting point. In the weeks ahead, we'll take these areas one at a time and explore them in much greater depth—from aerobic capacity and strength to social connection, purpose, metabolic health, bone health, prevention, and more.
Throughout the series, we'll focus not only on understanding these different dimensions of health, but on identifying the practical things we can do to influence them.
You don't need to be an athlete, a health expert, or someone who is already doing everything "right." Think of this first session as an opportunity to zoom out and look at the bigger picture:
What does living well for a long time mean to you—and what can you do today to support the person you want to be years from now?
