## Hike: Gertrude’s Nose Loop at Minnewaska

Distance: ~7 Miles | Elevation Gain: 1,300 Feet | Difficulty: Strenuous & Technical (A-), Pace: ~2.5 mph average

***

### The Experience

Join us for what is arguably the most spectacular cliff-side trek in the Shawangunks. Gertrude’s Nose offers a world-class landscape characterized by dramatic white quartz conglomerate cliffs, sprawling views of the Palmaghatt Ravine, and the trail's signature feature: deep, labyrinthine rock crevices.
This is a rewarding but physically demanding hike that requires steady footing, physical stamina, and a good head for heights.

### Safety & Waitlist Policy

Because of the rugged nature of this terrain—including narrow cliff edges and technical fissures—everyone will initially be placed on the waitlist.
To ensure the safety of the group and prevent anyone from becoming stranded on the technical sections, we will move hikers to the "Going" list based on:

  • Prior experience with this group on strenuous hikes.
  • Confirmed ability to handle 7+ miles at a 2.5 mph pace, including significant technical maneuvering.

Our goal is to keep the group cohesive and ensure everyone finishes the loop safely.

### Essential Gear

  • Boots: Sturdy hiking boots with high-traction soles are required (rock surfaces can be slippery even when dry).
  • Trekking Poles: Highly recommended for balance on uneven rock and crevices.
  • Safety: Small personal First Aid kit.
  • Hydration: Minimum of 2 liters of water.
  • Sun Protection: Significant portions of the ridge are fully exposed; bring a hat and sunscreen.

### Logistics

  • Parking: Minnewaska is extremely popular. Please arrive 20–30 minutes early to secure a spot. Note the $10 vehicle entry fee (or use your Empire Pass).
  • Weather: High winds or wet conditions will necessitate a reschedule, as the cliff-side rock becomes hazardous when slick.

### Post-Hike Fun: Lunch at Mountain Brauhaus

After working up an appetite, we’ll head to the nearby Mountain Brauhaus for some excellent German fare. They are famous for their schnitzel and spaetzle, along with a great variety of beers—the perfect way to celebrate a successful Alpine style hike!
