Hello friends!
Did you know, Mataaho is the god of earthquakes and eruptions, the guardian of the earth's secrets, the god of volcanic forces?
Let's go visit Mataaho's home, Maungawhau!

***

The crater of Maungawhau (Mt Eden) seen here was called Te Ipu-a-Mataaho (the bowl of Mataaho) because this is where Mataaho lived. It is also said that the other volcanic cones of Auckland were formed when Mataaho’s wife left him and took his clothes, so the goddess Mahuika sent fires to warm him.

Sacred to Māori, Maungawhau's 50m deep crater is also known as Te Upu Kai a Mataaho, (the food bowl of Mataaho, a guardian of the earth who lived in the crater), and in past centuries local iwi placed offerings of food there for the powerful deity.

Let's go visit Mataaho’s home inside the crater and offer him food!

Total distance: 5Km Time: 1-2 hours.
