On October 15, 1954, Toronto was devastated by the deadliest Hurricane of the 1954 season. Hazel was the most intense hurricane to hit the continent of North America in 1954.
Prior to the disaster that struck Toronto, the storm killed 469 people in Haiti, and the Caribbean before striking the United States. It roared ashore as a Category 4 hurricane.
After causing 95 deaths in the US, Hazel struck Ontario, raising the death toll by 81, mostly in Toronto. As a result of the high death toll and the damage caused, its name was retired from use.
But Toronto gained so much from the 1954 disaster, and our ravines and parklands are our lungs of the city. Thanks to Hazel we have our green spaces for generations to come.
This walking tour is for all levels and walkers with a few small hills and some steps. The tour begins outside the Weston Branch of the Toronto Public Library at Weston Road and 2 King Street, and returns to the starting location at the end of the walk. TTC bus routes are adjacent.
This special yearly tour has a ticket price of $15.00 per person.
