Leslieville was established in the 1850s, by George Leslie (1804-1893).
Majority of the early residents were gardeners or brick makers at one of the many brick-making factories in the area. This was an industrial area on the edge of Toronto. Leslie's original home at Queen Street East and Leslie Street was demolished years ago, but plenty of history remains for the interested walker!
South Riverdale as Leslieville is sometimes called was home to light industry. Eastern Ave. south of Queen Street East. hosted both metal processing and tanning businesses. However, with that type of industry came the dangers of contaminated land. Leslieville has been dealing with that problem for decades.
Almost all of these industrial areas have been abandoned and are being redeveloped as prime residential areas.
And let's not forget Alexander Muir. And we all know about him, and his daydreaming under a maple tree and what that led to? Hope to see you on this fascinating walking tour. A great start to the very near on our doorstep New Year 2025.
This walk is for all fitness levels. Please dress for the weather and bring water. This tour begins on Queen Street East just west of Booth Avenue adjacent to the Jimmie Simpson Recreation Centre at 870 Queen Street East. We end at Leslie Street and Queen Street East!
This tour has a ticket price of $15.00 per person.
