Human Values Meetup - online
Details
Our next Meetup, on the fourth Sunday of the month, will be online. We're still considering the possibility of meeting in person again at an upcoming meeting, with a Zoom connection available at the same time for those who are farther away so they could join us online.
The topic for Sunday, June 28 will be: "The Origin of Left and Right Politics". Early in the French Revolution, at the National Assembly meetings, they rotated which deputy was the temporary president of the assembly. Those members who sat on the president's right were those who favored monarchy, privilege, and monopoly, while those who sat on the president's left were those who opposed monarchy, privilege, and monopoly.
Over the years since then, factions among Left and Right have varied as to what extent they favored concentrated control over political power and economic power. Some among the left and right have advocated dictatorship even though not as a monarchy (for example, Stalin and Mao on the left; Mussolini and Hitler on the right), and some segments among both Left and Right have advocated centralized control over the economy. We will discuss how Left and Right have varied in terms of centralized control over political power and economic power. Mike O'Mara will give a brief introduction to the topic, followed by open discussion.

We meet the 4th Sunday of each month, 12:30-2:00, and are currently meeting online. At about 12:45, the speaker that day introduces the topic (usually a 20 minute introduction), followed by open discussion.

We were meeting in a restaurant before the covid situation. When we met there, our format was: lunch and socializing, the first hour; then a presentation, followed by open discussions. The topics are on various subjects related to human values, such as: aspects of society; the arts; social sciences; nature and evolution; history; current events; science and technology; ethics; philosophy, etc.
