We all know that wines from Burgundy are expensive. It is one of the reasons why the IWSS has not hosted a Burgundy tasting for many years. However, one of the Institute's aims is to allow members to taste wines they would not otherwise have the opportunity to try.

In collaboration with Master of Wine Mark O'Bryen and wine agency Hatch Mansfield, we have organised an opportunity to look at some of the region's wine . We will focus on villages with the same supreme wine making tradition, yet do not attract the same attention as the big names.

That does not mean that these wines are not expensive! They are just not quite as pricey as the more famous ones. It does mean, though, that this tasting will require a higher attendance fee than usual: £40 per person. Payment in advance is required, and details of how to pay are given, below.

Of course, Burgundy is recognised as the home of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. So, if you love these varieties, this will be the perfect tasting for you. If you tend to be "ABC" (Anything but Chardonnay), then this tasting offers the chance to discover why the old world originally fell in love with Chardonnay - while also offering you some Pinot Noir!

The region stretches from within the suburbs of Dijon, in the North, to either the fringe of Beaujolais or the edge of Lyon, depending on one's definition, in the South. The prime terroir is on the Côte d'Or escarpment, but it includes the Mâconnais and the Côte Chalonnaise, too.

We may have heard of Puligny-Montrachet or Gevrey-Chambertin, but what about the likes of Ladoix, Chenôve, Rully or Loché? Mark will tutor us through an exploration of more affordable sources of Burgundy, such as these. (Will any of these particular villages be on tonight's list? There is only one way to find out!)

As mentioned, this tasting will require payment in advance, to book your place. To do so, please transfer your £40 to our bank account, using the following details:
Bank - Royal Bank of Scotland
Account name - Institute of Wines and Spirits Scotland
Sort Code - 83-27-08
Account number - 00772103
Also sign up for the tasting!

This could well be the highlight of the IWSS season - in particular if you like Chardonnay and Pinot Noir!

We look forward to welcoming you to this evening. Doors open at 19:15 for the 19:30 start.
