What we’re about
Welcome to the Irreverent Book Club! We’re a group of like-minded (and perhaps not so like-minded) individuals that get together and discuss selections of what are widely considered to be the finest, most influential, and/or life-changing pieces of literature.
We will predominately focus on western literature however suggestions for non-western texts and books are certainly welcome.
We are called “The Irreverent” because while even a supposedly legendary book can be worthy of reading and discussing, we also feel it can be equally worthy of critique and admonishment and are unafraid of doing so.
As Mark Twain famously said, “The classics are praised, never read.”
The topics we hope to touch upon in our discussions are broad and deep: philosophy, morality, relationships, politics, religion, spirituality, sociology, justice, etc…
However given the sensitivity of these topics we ask that you conduct yourself in a dignified, empathetic, and thoughtful manner. Managing our emotions, being considerate of other people’s time and space, and being mindful of overall personal conduct is essential to fostering the best conversations and are non-negotiable.
The previous organizer of the group capped meetings at 12 rsvp’s and I think I will follow that example.
Currently the plan is to meet at the Literati Cafe on the last Sunday morning of the month starting in February.
We look forward to seeing you all at the next event!

The Kreutzer Sonata (Russian: Крейцерова соната) is a novella by Leo Tolstoy, named after Beethoven's Kreutzer Sonata. The novella was published in 1889, and was promptly censored by the Russian authorities.
In 1890, the United States Post Office Department prohibited the mailing of newspapers containing serialized installments of The Kreutzer Sonata.
