Wild West Wineauxs: Field Trip to Goldfield Ghost Town
Details
Howdy Wineauxs!
The perfect accompaniment to our Wild West Book Club theme is a Literary Wineauxs field trip to Apache Junction. I've done this SO MANY TIMES, maybe it's just weird-ol' me, but I'm obsessed! I love it!
Here's the itinerary....
FIRST: We will first meet at the Superstition Mountains Lost Dutchman Museum at 10:30am. We will spend an hour here walking around the different sites including the historic museum with lots of artifacts from Arizona's storied history. There is a chapel where Elvis filmed Charro!, the Apacheland Barn where many westerns and Hollywood films of yesteryears were filmed. STUNNING views of the Superstition Mountains. There is an old stamp mill, replica historic buildings from the western era, railroad exhibit and more. Admission $7 for adults.
SECOND: We will take a GORGEOUS drive through Apache Junction, turning and coasting through beautiful Saquaro-covered hills. This will lead us to the end of the route -- Tortilla Flats. Lunchtime! at this very iconic restaurant filled with wall-to-wall dollar bills and comfort food menu items. There's a yummy gelato shop, historic buildings, gift shop and more.
LAST STOP: Goldfield Ghost Town. There's so much to do and see here. My favorites are the underground mine tour, the train, the bordello tour, prickly pear margaritas at an old saloon, and this witchy apothecary shop. Tons of shops and replica buildings of the old west. At certain times they have a performance of hired actors in a Wild West shootout.
You can break off at anytime from the day if you need to leave early. This is a very easy drive if you've never been here. It takes me under an hour from Phoenix but I never hit any traffic so it's super breezy.
