Pedal to the Paranoid: Biking to the Island of Asylums

Join us for a not-so-scary spin through NYC’s “Island of Asylums” and beyond. Throughout the 1800s, Roosevelt Island housed an infamous collection of facilities, including
the first municipal insane asylum in the country.
We’ll roll out from Socrates Sculpture Park, hop over to Roosevelt Island, and cruise along the East River before finishing at Strong Rope Brewery for well-earned hangs and optional drinks.
This is an easygoing social ride, roughly 17 miles, with plenty of time to enjoy the views and chat. Citi Bikes and e-bikes are welcome, and there is absolutely no pressure to drink alcohol at the brewery—the focus is on the company, the history, and the waterfront scenery.
Bring a helmet, water, and a lock so you can relax comfortably at the end.
Expect a chill pace and a few darkly funny asylum jokes as we pedal to the paranoid together.
This is an informal ride; each rider is solely responsible for their own safety, equipment, and compliance with traffic laws. I’m not providing supervision or instructions—I’m just sharing the time and the route. By attending, you acknowledge the inherent risks of urban cycling and agree that you alone are responsible for your riding decisions and any consequences.
