Chapter 2 of A New Earth, “Ego: The Current State of Humanity,” explains how most human beings live trapped in the ego—an identity built from thoughts, roles, stories, and possessions. Eckhart argues that we confuse who we are with what we have, what others think of us, and the nonstop voice in our heads. This egoic identity feels separate and threatened, so it constantly compares, judges, defends, and looks for enemies or problems. On a larger scale, the same ego patterns play out in groups (nations, religions, political movements), which is why humanity’s “normal” state includes conflict, violence, and persistent dissatisfaction. Eckhart’s central point is that recognizing the ego in ourselves—simply noticing it—creates a bit of inner space, and that space is the beginning of awakening to a deeper, more peaceful sense of self beyond ego.
Join us on December 14th as we continue our exploration of "A New Earth."
We will be using breakout rooms and small discussion groups during the meeting so please read or listen to chapter 2 of A New Earth before the meeting so you can take part.
As you read this chapter it can be helpful to have a diary or notebook handy and write down anything that resonates with you. Also, here are some questions for you to contemplate about this chapter.
1. How does this chapter connect the ego with human suffering ?
2. Eckhart often mentions the mind's need to be right and make others wrong. Can you notice this pattern in your own life ?
3. Can you catch the " voice in your head " while reading this chapter ?
