Chapter 5 is titled “The Pain-Body.”
In this chapter, Eckhart Tolle says that people carry an accumulation of old emotional pain inside them. He calls this the pain-body. It is made up of unresolved hurt, anger, fear, grief, and resentment from the past. Most of the time it may lie dormant, but certain situations can trigger it and bring it to life.
When the pain-body becomes active, it feeds on more negativity. It can distort how a person interprets events, make them overreact, and create conflict in relationships. Eckhart suggests that in these moments, people are often not responding from their true, aware self, but from this stored emotional pain. He also says the pain-body can become almost addictive, because it seeks situations that generate more emotional pain for it to feed on.
Healing begins when you recognise it as it arises instead of identifying with it. Eckhart encourages observing it with presence and awareness, without judgment. By noticing it consciously, rather than acting it out, its grip weakens.
Join us on April 26th as we continue our exploration of "A New Earth."
We'll be using break out rooms and small discussion groups so please read chapter 5 of A New Earth before the meeting so you can take part. As you read this chapter have a journal or notebook to hand so you can jot down anything that resonates with you and either bring it to the meeting or share in the WhatsApp group.
Also here are some questions for you to contemplate as you read this chapter.
1. How does Eckhart Tolle define "The Pain Body" in this chapter?
2. How do unresolved emotions affect communication in close relationships?
3. What do you think is the first step in starting to heal old emotional pain?
