Chapter 6 - “Breaking Free,” explains that freedom from the ego and the pain-body begins with awareness. Eckhart argues that we do not overcome unconscious patterns by fighting or judging them, but by noticing them as they arise. When we can observe anger, resentment, defensiveness, or emotional pain without fully identifying with it, we create space between our true awareness and our conditioned reactions.
This chapter emphasises that relationships often reveal these hidden patterns, making everyday conflict an opportunity for awakening. Acceptance of the present moment is central: we can still act, set boundaries, or make changes, but from presence rather than resistance. The main message is that liberation happens now, whenever we recognise, “This is a pattern in me, but it is not who I am.”
Join us on May 31st as we continue our exploration of A New Earth.
We'll be using breakout rooms and small discussion groups so please read chapter 6 of A New Earth so you can take part in the meeting.
As you read this chapter have a journal or notebook to hand and jot down anything that resonates with you and feel free to share this in the WhatsApp group.
Also here are some questions for you to contemplate about this chapter.
1. What does Eckhart mean by “breaking free” in this chapter? Free from what, exactly?
2. What is the difference between having an emotion and being identified with that emotion?
3. Can conflict become a form of spiritual practice? What would that look like in real life?
Please note : Preregistration will be necessary to attend this event. The Zoom link will be emailed to those who register.
