New Year's Eve Sailing
Details
Hi Guys - I'm planning a New Year's Eve sailing trip to Cherbourg! Great chance to accumulate some miles (~160NM), do some night sailing, do a cross channel trip and stock up on French wine! This trip is suitable for those with no experience, but at least half the crew will have to have sufficient experience to be comfortable to helm in the dark. This is a non-commercial trip run on a shared cost basis.
About me: I'm an RYA Yachtmaster Offshore sailor with experience of crossing the Atlantic as well as multiple trips across the Channel and organiser of around 50 excursions with the London Sailing Club community.
The Plan
Tuesday 30th December - We will meet at the boat on Tuesday at noon with the intention of sailing by the best route possible, depending on weather and tides, to Cherbourg.
Wednesday 31st December - Arrive in Cherbourg, stock up with French delicacies, and prepare for NYE feast! A restaurant will have been booked in the town of Cherbourg where we can see in the New Year.
Thursday 1st January - Set sail for England and if we're lucky make it for last orders in Lymington.
Friday 2nd January - Hand back the boat at Hamble around lunchtime, and be off the boats before it's dark. Exact timings will be determined by tides, so don't book travel on specific trains, etc.
PLEASE NOTE: Experience shows that things cannot always go to plan at this time of year. Strong winds are not uncommon, and may make the intended destination of Cherbourg not possible. By coming on the trip you agree that the final plan will need to be adapted to the conditions. Even if we can't get to Cherbourg, we'll find a great place to see in the New Year come what may.
Because this trip is being advertised via the London Sailing Club’s platforms, any participant who is not already a full member of the Club (which costs £24 per year) will need to join prior to the start of the trip.
Costs
These will be shared equally. Final costs are being calculated and I am currently negotiating the best deal with the chartering company. The sailing part should work at out up to £200 per person for the boat rental, fuel, marinas and food on board - breakfasts, lunch, snacks, soft drinks, and meals on passage, based on having a crew of 8. To make the trip viable in terms of sufficient numbers to man watches, etc, I intend to sail with 7 or 8 people ideally. Meals and drinks on land are not included and will be at your own cost.
Costs will be refunded if the trip is cancelled by charter company, after they have paid the refund. If you have to withdraw for any reason a refund may be possible if: a) another signed up member of the club takes and pays for your place; b) if refunding you does not penalise any of the remaining participants.
As the trip is happening soon, costs will be payable as soon as possible. I will make these known to all those who express interest.
Kit and things to bring
- Hat, gloves and warm clothing - lots of layers is ideal. If you don’t have sailing gear then ski stuff can work
- Waterproofs - if you don't have your own it's advisable to hire a set from the charter company
- Waterproof boots and thick socks - sailing boots can be bought fairly inexpensively online
- Pillow and sleeping bag - you may also want to bring thermal underwear
You can read more about suitable kit by clicking here.
The Boat
The boat I'll have chartered is likely to be a 37ft Beneteau Oceanis or similar. It's coded for 8 people. Accommodation will be aboard the yacht in shared double cabins. The boat will have hot and cold running water, a loo, heating, and when on shore plenty of electricity for charging phones, etc.
Visas / Immigration
Important Note: This trip will cross an international border. It is your responsibility to ensure you have whatever paperwork you need in place to travel to France and/or the Channel Islands, depending on your nationality and immigration status. You will almost certainly need a valid passport with plenty of time left before it expires. In due course I will provide further advice to those who sign up to the trip.
