With over 1,000 boats on the start line, this is one of the world's biggest yacht races and the atmosphere will be electric! This trip isn’t suitable for first-time sailors, but first-time racers are very welcome. This is a non-commercial trip run on a shared-cost basis. Be quick to book - this event ALWAYS sells out!

Plan

As in previous years, we've chartered a pair of Beneteau Oceanis 37s – and there’ll be a dozen identical boats racing in our class. We’ll be 8 people per yacht and we have the boats from Thursday morning until Sunday evening. We’ll probably sail for fun on Thursday, but crew must arrive by Friday morning latest so we have a full day to practise with the spinnaker and hone our racing skills! We’ll be berthed in Cowes on Friday night for the pre-race festivities. On Saturday we’ll be off the dock by 6am; the race begins around 7am and it’ll take c.10 hours to complete the 50-mile loop of the Isle of Wight. The race is followed by one of the biggest nights of the summer – again we'll be berthed in Cowes at the heart of the action. Accommodation will be aboard the yachts in shared double cabins.

Skippers

Nick Roffey (RYA Yachtmaster Offshore) and David Wheatley (RYA Day Skipper) are organising and skippering this event. Both have considerable experience in the Solent area, and both are well-known for their competitive spirit on the water! Nick's skippered the Round the Island Race on several previous occasions, but has so far never been the first LSC boat to cross the finish line. David's been round the track on the winning boat a few times, and returns as skipper this year. So the competition is on! Both skippers have additional qualifications such as VHF, First Aid, Sea Survival and Offshore Safety.

Cost

This is a non-commercial trip run on a shared-cost basis. The cost is £510 per person, which covers yacht charter, all racing fees, spinnaker hire, fuel, marina dues, breakfasts, lunches, snacks and soft drinks. It doesn’t cover evening meals or getting yourself to/from Hamble. This event always sells out, so we ask for full payment on booking to secure your place. Note that, because this trip is being advertised via the London Sailing Club’s platforms, any participant who is not already a full member of the Club (which costs £24 per year) will need to join in order to book their place. If you need to withdraw a refund will only be possible if your place can be sold to another member of the club.
