Theory Thursdays - online sessions discussing sailing theory

Theory Thursdays is a series of relaxed evening sessions designed to take the mystery (and even the fear!) out of the theory side of sailing. Our six free webinars are open to all full and social members of the Club. So whether you’re totally new to navigation and passage planning, or you’re already suitably qualified but just feeling a bit rusty, please join us for some gentle theory discussion.

Session 4 – Navigation (5 Mar)
Session 5 – Rules of the Road (19 Mar)
Session 6 – Weather & Passage Planning (2 Apr)

The sessions are a blend of hosted discussion and group Q&A, during which a few of our regular skippers share their own knowledge and do their best to answer your questions about key navigational concepts. We'll talk about how these principles actually play out in practice at sea, and we'll take a look at real-world tools and resources including charts, almanacs and pilot books.

Our six free webinars are open to all full and social members of the Club. After you've signed up via the LSC website, and closer to the time of the sessions, you'll be able to see the Zoom login details. You can join the session using any device, but we recommend using something with a large enough screen for you to see the slides.

Please note: These informal sessions are not being led by professional theory instructors, or indeed by anyone who claims to be an expert in these topics. They are being organised voluntarily by LSC members for the free benefit of other LSC members. These sessions are in no way intended as a substitute for attending a proper, comprehensive navigation and seamanship theory course. The RYA website can point you towards shorebased courses offered by RYA-accredited training centres.
