Async, Imposter Syndrome and Sustainability (in-person)

Details

Join us for a fantastic evening of talks and Umbraco chat! We have a busy line-up planned so shall expect to start the talks promptly at 7pm.

** AGENDA **
A quick round up of recent Umbraco news, followed by three talks:

ASync all the things - Jason Elkin, Bump Digital
Does the sight of an async or await keyword fill you with terror? Perhaps you're using async in your code for performance, but you’re not sure why? Maybe you find the idea of thread management just too Task-ing? (If you don’t get that joke, you will by the end!).

Asynchronous programming has been a first class citizen in .NET for over a decade, it’s especially important for ASP.NET websites, like Umbraco, and is a concept that all web developers need to get to grips with.

We’re going to look at how async/await works by debugging a running ASP.NET application, and talk a little bit about why it’s so crucial for the performance of your web apps.

Why do I look like a designer? An alternative perspective on imposter syndrome - Yinuo Meng, TPXimpact
I am a full-stack developer who’s been frequently mistaken for a designer. Why? In this talk I will take you on my journey to find out the reasons. Along the way we will take a deep dive into sexism in tech, and I will propose a new way and better way of fighting imposter syndrome. This talk is for you if you are interested in transforming this industry into a better place for everyone.

A sustainable approach to the web - Thomas Morris, TPXimpact
The web is for everyone, just like the planet we live on. In this talk, we'll look at development practices in the context of digital sustainability, with a wide range of examples as to how to reduce and measure the carbon impact of your websites.

** VENUE **
TPXimpact have kindly offered to host this meetup. They are based in The Hickman building on Whitechapel Road (a short walk from Aldgate East tube station).

TPXimpact will be providing food and drinks for us all, so please make sure to sign up well in advance so we know numbers.
