While the long days still loom over us, it's time to strike out through some of the finest and most varied landscapes southeast England has to offer, with this 15-miler* through woods, heaths and downs from Haslemere to Guildford*. Highlights include the Devil's Punch Bowl, a Site of Special Scientific Interest with breathtaking views and some surprising memorials, now mercifully spared from the traffic of the A3; the wetlands and heathlands of Thursley National Nature Reserve, a beloved filming location and site of one of the UK's longest-running ecological experiments (about the effects of nitrogen enrichment on soil, if you must ask); and the flanks of the romantically named Hog's Back on the final stretch into Guildford*.
Plus pubs, pubs galore! There'll be one for lunch and others scattered throughout the day. Don't plan to be back early. We'll sort group train tickets when we're all gathered on the day. Marvellous - see you there!
* As regulars to this group will know, Guildford is a semi-mythical city, with the singular characteristic that the closer you get to it, the further it is away. We might or might not actually end in Guildford; if the chase becomes too enervating or the pub stops too attractive, we might shorten our route and end elsewhere (= Godalming).
