Black Down: An autumnal wander to the highest height of West Sussex
Details
Nothing beats the glories of the Surrey Hills in Autumn - a riot of oranges, browns, yellows and reds that reminds you that New England is merely derivative of Merrie Olde England.
Somewhat confusingly, this walk will deal with a part of the Surrey Hills that is almost exclusively in Sussex - and even more confusingly, will actually start in Hampshire, in the little village of Liphook just southwest of Haslemere. But the principle is very much the same, as you'll see in a glorious 9-mile (15-km) walk through some of the best wooded Greensand scenery this part of England has to offer.
Highlight after lunch is an assault of Black Down - at a dizzying 280 metres, the highest point in all of the historic country of Sussex, and well worth the climb to admire the extensive views all the way over to the ridge of the South Downs, which everyone assumes is higher, but isn't.
Marvellous - see you there! (And yes of course, as usual, there'll be a fine pub to stop at for lunch, and another at the end. Tickets we will sort out on the day!)
