The clocks have gone back, the evenings are darker, the mornings are lighter, but we all know where this ends. But winter isn't here yet - even if some Christmas markets have already started up - so let's enjoy the golden colours of Autumn while they are still in force, with a classic wander through the Surrey Hills.

The exact routing might yet be influenced by the vagaries of trains, but to a first approximation the route will be around 10 miles (16km), leading from the village of Chilworth via the woods (and heaths) of Blackheath - the Surrey one - and round in a loop back past Albury and the glories of St Martha's Hill to end in the semi-mythical city of Guildford.

A classic for any season, but especially this one. As ever time to stop for a pub lunch is planned in. Marvellous - see you there!
