Details

The Lunar Society of Quito
“Challenging Conventions Under the Full Moon"
The Lunar Society of Quito meets in the spirit of the original Lunar Society of Birmingham, formed in the 18th Century. The founders, including Erasmus Darwin, Joseph Priestley, and James Watt, were driven by a love of knowledge. They met at the full moon in hopes that their horses could more easily see their way home!

The Lunar Society of Quito was founded in 2004 in support of the Socratic academic program at USFQ. It was discontinued for several years because of the health of my wife. Now, we have re-started The Lunar Society.

Join us for our next gathering, where we will boldly challenge widely held beliefs, norms and traditions.

Widely held belief: Schools and universities exist to transmit knowledge
Our Topic: Transmitting knowledge is a terribly limiting view of the purpose of education. Discussion leader: Leonardo Wild, Miranda, and family

Date of our next meeting: Wednesday, June 11, 2025 at 18.30. For those who want to socialize and meet some of the members before the meeting, feel free to come at 18.00 for coffee or tea.

Cost: Cost for light meal (comida ligera), drinks, and meeting: $10.00. Pay in the El Domo restaurant.

Directions to El Domo (across the street from Pachamama in Tumbaco and behind La Casa de Arte—which is clearly visible from the road)

Reservation: For open and effective discussions, we limit the number of participants to a maximum of 20. Please reserve your space and confirm your attendance by sending a WhatsApp message to Gerald Finch at 099-782-6605.

Best wishes to all,
Gerald L. Finch, PhD (Founder of The Lunar Society of Quito and professor at USFQ)
