What we’re about
Welcome! This group is for enthusiast photographers who want to:
a) meet other enthusiast photographers
b) explore Melbourne and surrounds
c) practice their photography
We are not a techie group. It's not about the size of your lens but about the joy of photography, spending time with other photographers, learning from each other. You can work in film, digital, mirrorless, smart phone. We've even had somebody come along with a sketch-pad and pencil once.
These outings are free and run by a stellar group of organisers on their free time. Venue entry fees (where applicable) are paid by you, and coffee & cake (or beers, as the case may be) which we often do after the outing is over.
You can share your photos - to give and receive feedback - on the Meetup event page. Each other’s photos represent a great opportunity for learning, particularly in relation to lighting, technique and composition.
To help ensure we operate in a safe and inclusive manner we ask all members and guests to abide by the following guidelines

Join & come along!
All ages welcome.

See all- Abstract and Street Photography in FootscrayFootscray Market, Footscray
There are many reasons why we come together as a group to photograph a variety of genres, and one reason which I thought we could use for this event is to learn and apply. We can learn from professional photographers on their podcast or learn from each other, and apply what we have learned at our event.
I recently got inspired by a Youtube podcast by Art Wolfe - called Pathways to creativity - embracing the abstract. Art Wolfe, if you are not familiar with is "an American photographer and conservationist, best known for colour images of landscapes, wildlife and native cultures. His career has been described as multifaceted involving journalism, art and education".
So I thought why not organise an event which focuses on abstract photography and for those who are not interested may choose to do street photography. Alternatively you may choose to do both.
According to google, "abstract photography is a style where the photographer aims to create images that are not immediately recognizable as real-world objects or scenes. It focuses on shapes, colours, textures, light to convey emotions or sensations rather than directly representing the subject.
To get inspired or learn more about abstract photography, we encourage you to view podcasts or literature from some of these photographers:
- Art Wolfe - YouTube podcast "Pathways to creativity - embracing the abstract"
- Ming Thein
- Aaron Siskind
- Minor White
- Bill Brandt
- Ernst Haas
- Freeman Patterson
For those interested in street photography, Footscray offers you great opportunities to do that including Street Art in a number of spots.
Here’s some info I got Gemini to help me with
More infoWe will post the schedule, information and meeting point very soon. It is likely we will meet near the Footscray Market.

- Photographing a Dragon Boat team in training (placeholder)Needs location
Through a friend I have managed to get in touch with the CYSM Sea Dragon group and they have very kindly given us permission to photograph the team in training! I have suggested that we can tag them on their insta page - a small token of our appreciation.
They will begin their land warm up for about half and hour, followed by their water training. It is of course important that we all respect their space and not in any way interfere with their training session (We will cover this at our briefing session) or get into their boats. We are also not use our photos of them to promote things that are not in line with their sporting culture (e.g. smoking, alcohol etc).
I will try and scout the area prior to the event to find areas we can photograph from as the water training covers a vast area along the river. Also note that there will other boats around that belong to other organisations.
It is a wonderful opportunity for all of us - keep a look out for further information very soon.
Lens suggestion - given they will be training at a distance, might be worth bring a long or zoom lens if you have.
