Blackhead Mountain Hike

Details

Join us for a hike up Blackhead Mountain (3,940 ft), one of the Catskills’ famous 35 high peaks! This is a rewarding but moderately strenuous hike with steep climbs and beautiful payoffs along the way. From the summit, you’ll be treated to sweeping views of the Hudson Valley to the east and the rugged Catskills to the west.
We’ll start from the Black Dome Range Trailhead parking area on Big Hollow Road, following the Black Dome Range Trail up the shoulder of the mountain. Expect a good workout with rocky, rooty sections and some steep ascents, especially as we near the top. Round trip distance is about 5 miles with an elevation gain of over 1,500 feet. Details:

  • Meeting time: 9:00 AM at the Big Hollow Road parking lot [Google Maps Link]
  • Estimated duration: 3-4 hours, including breaks at viewpoints
  • Difficulty: Moderate to strenuous
  • What to bring: Plenty of water, sturdy hiking shoes, snacks, and layers (the summit can be breezy).

Optional: If the group feels up for it, we may extend the hike along the ridge to tag Black Dome or Thomas Cole for an extra challenge.
