Robert Graves's novel I, Claudius (1934). Considered one of the greatest historical novels of the 20th Century. Narrated by Clau-Clau-Claudius through several Roman emperors, from Augustus through Caligula to Claudius himself. It is considered to be widely responsible for our very popular conception of what Rome was like 2000 years ago. (Much the way Endless Love informed our vision of 1979.)
