The astronomers and official timekeepers of the world have determined that the summer solstice takes place on June 20th this year, but what do they know anyway? We're kicking off summer a day early with our selection of A Supposedly Fun Thing I'll Never Do Again by David Foster Wallace (1997).

This witty non-fiction collection, from a noted local author, contains several seasonally appropriate choices. The titular essay recounts the author's (supposedly fun) excursion on a 7-day Caribbean cruise. Another deals with his observations about Midwestern Culture (ope) at the Illinois State Fair. Two selections dive into the science and artistry of the game of tennis. The entire collection isn't technically all about summer and the outdoors (there's pop culture criticism too), but come on, I'm trying to find a throughline here.

If you've read David Foster Wallace before, you know that the man loves his endnotes. Don't skip these, as there are plenty of punchlines hidden behind the superscripts! And mercifully, this collection containing seven essays is still roughly 700 pages shorter than his Infinite Jest.

Join us for book club this month as we discuss other supposedly fun summer activities, share our own state fair experiences, and speculate about whether DFW would have found artistry in the sport of pickleball (hint: no).

Remember to bring a recommendation for a future book club!
