Book Club: No Longer Human by Osamu Dazai
Tea Rose Garden, 70 North Raymond Ave, Pasadena, CA, USNo Longer Human is a classic 1948 semi-autobiographical novel by Japanese author Osamu Dazai, considered his masterpiece, that chronicles the life of Yozo Oba, a man alienated from society who uses a facade of clownish behavior to hide his inability to understand human emotions, leading him down a path of self-destruction through alcohol, drugs, and failed relationships. Published shortly after Dazai's own suicide, the novel explores themes of social alienation, existential despair, and the search for identity, resonating with modern readers for its raw and poignant depiction of the human condition.
