FTI: Trust: How Media and Governance Shape Our Society

Details

Hosted by Remco van Santen

Join us for a compelling webinar that explores the essential fabric of our society: trust. We will examine the vital role trust plays in fostering societal cohesion and nurturing personal relationships amid the turbulent dynamics of conflicting narratives and power struggles.

As faith in our institutions declines and misinformation spreads, this session will delve into the various dimensions of trust and its profound impact on our society. We'll discuss whether the decrease in trust signifies a fundamental shift in our values and worldviews, supported by historical examples that highlight our current crisis of confidence.

Our conversation will address critical issues, including the erosion of trust in institutions driven by media fragmentation and failures in leadership. We will explore how changing perceptions of truth and trust are reshaping our social consciousness, balancing individual skepticism with a collective search for authenticity and hope.

Furthermore, we will investigate the connections between trust, economic prosperity, and well-being, questioning the traditional metrics used to measure trust. The webinar will also provide insights into philosophical skepticism about trust, especially Nietzsche’s critiques, and discuss the significance of "post-truth," named Word of the Year by the Oxford Dictionary in 2016.

By unpacking the complex and influential nature of trust, we aim to uncover its true dynamics and chart a course towards a more trusting and unified society. Join us to explore these critical issues and envision a pathway forward.
