Dear Friends,
On January 17-18, 2019 the Data Strategy Alliance will work with the world’s leading institutions to explore how to develop a Data Strategy for Ocean data. We will review real data from real organizations in real use cases, working in teams to ideate and co-create new models and methods for building an ocean-centric Data Strategy.
Today, everyone needs a Data Strategy to tell fact from fiction, determine appropriate uses, and maximize the value of data and information.
Data has no value when it is idle, yet most of us horde it as if it were gold. Data is like labor, generating transactional value when put to productive use. Most often, data at rest is a huge sunk IT cost. It costs money to collect it, process and curate, protect, store, and report. The illusion of “Data as the new oil” blinds everyone to the reality that data is expensive to keep, hard to use wisely, and often confounding in its application.
Every organization, large and small, public and private, needs a Data Strategy to get data supply off the sofa, discuss what it means, send it out into the world to find new markets that can can increase demand and maximize utility; appropriately, with the right purpose.
We all want better outcomes. It is the purpose of this Ocean Data Strategy event to study a real life Data Strategy use case that confronts us all with an existential challenge – saving our oceans – to develop a better understanding of Data Strategy, its models and methods, features and benefits. We will work together with UN agencies, ocean experts, and a trans-disciplinary team to develop a Data Strategy for an Ocean Data Challenge that can help achieve goals set in the United Nation’s SDG14.
