It would be hard to find a filmmaker whose films are better suited for the big screen projection than Stanley Kubrick, and his sprawling 18th century epic BARRY LYNDON, about a self-centered Irish ne'er-do-well, serves as one of the best showcases for why that is.
With his trademark attention to detail, Kubrick and his team used specialized lenses originally developed for NASA during the Apollo moon landings so that his candle-lit scenes could quite literally be lit by candlelight. The effect of that alone, paired with his grand, sweeping landscapes, makes for a visually sumptuous and technically stunning film that is without peer decades later.
But of course, the technical details are only a part of what made the man a legend. With a stoic lead performance from Ryan O’Neal (LOVE STORY), Kubrick presents one of the most challenging, enigmatic, and fascinating characters he ever put onscreen. Lovers of Kubrick’s work will no doubt be familiar with his often dark view of humanity, and this exploration of an irredeemable antihero willing to do whatever it takes to climb the social ladder makes for one of the most compelling examples ever of his unique cinematic vision.
