For a long time, I learned how to survive by editing myself.
I learned which parts of my story were “acceptable,” which ones needed to stay quiet, and which ones were safer if they never made it to the table at all. Like many queer folks, I was taught—directly and indirectly—that belonging often came with conditions.
But here’s what I’ve learned along the way:
When we hide our stories, we shrink. When we share them, we heal.
Nate’s Authentic Story is not about having a perfect narrative or a dramatic testimony. It’s about telling the truth—gently, honestly, and at your own pace. It’s about reclaiming the parts of ourselves that were silenced, misunderstood, or pushed to the margins.
