Yoga and spiritual practice can offer meaning, transformation, friendship and a powerful sense of belonging.
They can also involve unusual levels of trust, vulnerability and authority.
In recent years, allegations of abuse, coercion and exploitation within yoga and spiritual communities have become increasingly visible. Documentaries, podcasts, investigations and social media have brought important experiences into public view. But these conversations can also become polarised very quickly.
Are spiritual teachers inherently dangerous? Is devotion simply a form of dependency? Why do intelligent people remain in communities that outsiders consider harmful? How can we take allegations seriously while also preserving fairness, evidence and due process? And how can seekers recognise the difference between a demanding spiritual path and an unhealthy system of control?
The Grey Zone is an open conversation for yoga practitioners, spiritual seekers and anyone trying to make sense of these questions.
It is a candid discussion bringing together perspectives from psychology, religious studies, journalism, law and lived experience. Attendees will have the chance to hear from a wide range of perspectives, ask questions to people with experience and engage the topic in a nuanced way.

Goal: To best equip ourselves to explore yoga and seek spiritual communities and experiences – while also protecting ourselves from potential harm.
What will we discuss?
The panel will explore:

  • How coercive dynamics can develop within spiritual groups
  • The difference between healthy commitment and unhealthy control
  • Warning signs that boundaries may be crossed
  • Why people join, remain in or leave intense spiritual communities
  • The purpose, value and potential risks of the guru-disciple relationship
  • How terms such as “cult” shape public understanding
  • What the law can and cannot establish
  • The difference between allegations, evidence, civil cases and criminal convictions
  • How journalists and documentary-makers construct stories about spiritual communities
  • When and how we can rely on media
  • The tension between exposing harm, sensationalism and trial by media
  • How communities can respond responsibly when concerns are raised
  • How seekers can remain open to spiritual experience without abandoning critical thought

Why is it called "The Grey Zone"?
Because in the modern world we often seek absolutes and guarantees. Part of seeking spirituality and guidance safely involves acknowledging that there are few absolutes and fewer guarantees. But with the right perspective, we can still seek safely.
