Humanism and Human Rights: Two Humanist Views

Details

You are invited to attend this event hosted by Humanists Australia.

Humanists advocate recognition and respect for all basic human rights. But do human rights exist? If so, what justifies them? How can we best understand the nature and extent of human rights? In this talk, Leslie Allan and Akiva Quinn present two alternative but perhaps convergent humanist approaches to human rights. Leslie Allan will argue for the view that it is the consequences for human happiness that provide the ultimate foundation for our various bills of human rights. Akiva Quinn will advocate the alternative humanist view that the implicit social contract between citizens is what justifies our concern for the rights and dignity of every human being and there are vital moral claims beyond human happiness alone. Following the presentation there will be an opportunity for questions and discussion.

RSVP here and via the Humanists Australia event which has details on booking tickets.

PLEASE NOTE that you need to book a ticket for access to the Zoom event link.
