Mary Shelley's Frankenstein (1818)
Details
Dear philosophers,
Let's add a Halloween theme to our discussions, my favourite fictional tale of the potential harms of experimental science-- Mary Shelley's epic story Frankenstein, or, a Modern Prometheus published in 1818. You can find a free online copy of the book here:
https://www.coreknowledge.org/wp-content/uploads/2023/08/CC_Frankenstein_Reader_W1.pdf
And listening to an audio book of the tale is the perfect way to spent an evening in October. I'm sure you can find one on many different apps.
Come along and discuss what you felt the book was about, in terms of the message it communicates about our desire to control nature, the way we treat those who may be different (e.g. the Creature), or any other theme or topic that caught your attention.
Hope to see some of you there. Please be sure to bring a lawn chair, and head towards the sheltered area with the bathrooms, we will be sitting behind that structure under a (now leaf-less!) tree. Dress warm! Some coffee or hot chocolate is advised as well with the wind by the lake.
Cheers,
Colin
