How to Think More and Better (Summer Reading Group meeting #1)
Details
Dear members,
This summer I will be holding two reading group sessions dedicated to covering the forthcoming book How to Think More and Better: Being Reasonable in Unreasonable Times by William Irvine. The book should be published in February, so available before the start of summer.
The expectation in clicking "attending" this event is you will purchase the book when it is published and read the assigned sections before the meeting.
For the first meeting in June we will cover the following sections of the book:
Introduction
PART ONE: Belief, Reconsidered
1. What Does It Mean to Believe?
2. Coming to Believe
3. Proving and Disproving Claims
4. Inconsistent Beliefs
PART TWO: Word Problems
5. Ambiguous Words
6. Emotive Language
7. Linguistic Pitfalls
PART THREE: Thinking Our Way through a Complex World
8. Understanding Causation
9. Solving Problems in a Complex World
10. Making Decisions in a Complex World
Please be sure to bring a lawn chair, as we will be sitting in a circle under a tree just past the sheltered area by the bathrooms. Hope to see some of you there.
Cheers,
Colin
