Details

Meet at I-17/Carefree Highway McDonalds at 8:45 AM and depart for the trail no later than 9:00 AM, traveling north on I-17 to the Table Mesa Road exit and air down on the east side.

The New River Trail, FR41 is about 19 miles long, a scenic trail that goes east into the Tonto National Forest and ends at its intersection with Seven Springs Road, FR24. If time permits, we may make a side trip on Big Maggie May, about 8 miles long. We will return to Seven Springs Road, FR24 and travel south to air up at the pavement near Carefree.

New River Trail crosses AZ State Trust Land which requires vehicles to have a State Trust Land Permit. Drivers are responsible for having a current permit with them. Application, payment for and printing of a permit can be done on-line in minutes at: https://asld.secure.force.com/recreationalpermit/

Past trips have been mostly easy with a couple moderate sections - steep, rocky hill climbs; some narrow, tippy shelf road; and rock gardens where monsoon storms washed boulders across the trail.

As usual, bring along appropriate survival and extraction equipment and supplies: water for you, passengers & vehicle; tools & recovery gear; clothing & footwear suitable for walking about in the desert; lunch & snacks; and, items for your comfort such as chairs, shade, hats & sun protection.
