When Fermi and Szilard started a nuclear fission chain reaction, the genie was out of the bottle (as Walt illustrates below). The question then was what kind of genie would he be? A genie that grants wishes, or a genie that destroys the world? Unfortunately Szilard decided to write a letter to the US government, and we all know what happens when you get the psychopaths involved.
But there was another direction, another path, that would provide even more nuclear power, that was much safer and cheaper, but would not produce weapons-grade uranium or plutonium. That path was abandoned in the 1970's but in the last few years there has been increasing interest in the path not taken, the path of safe, abundant, nuclear power. The path of Thorium.
