(Note: we have a tradition - rudely interrupted last year - that on holiday weekends we do a combined meetup of both The Green Anchor and Pig's Eye Meetups - this will replace the usual Sunday evening meetup this week. As we have in past years, we are meeting on Sunday morning at Psycho Suzi's in NE Minneapolis - if it is too wet and cold for the patio we'll meet inside - hope to see you there!)
In the last year it has never been more clear that government and large technology and media corporations work closely together both manage and control information, and at the same time monitor and track their citizen/subject/customer's information, location, economic life, and communications. While some politicians and pundits talk about privacy laws and regulations that restrict government and corporate collection and use of private individual information, the stark reality is that, unless you take action to protect yourself, Big Brother will know everything about you.
And for most people, this is just fine. People volunteer their personal information, and the personal information of their friends, family, and co-workers, all the time, and think nothing of it. You might imagine that your main concerns are the rapidly expanding government police state, or the evil mega-corporations. But you would be wrong - when you lose your job, the ability to buy food or find housing or travel, or are arrested as a domestic terrorist, it will be your friends, your neighbors, and your relatives that - just like it happened in Germany, the Soviet Union, and China (but much easier now) - will provide the evidence to win you an all expense paid one way trip to the camps.
We have discussed privacy and security for many years, and many of you have contemplated improving your individual privacy, and a few of you have actually taken steps to protect yourself. I have linked below several meetups relating to this topic that you may have attended or may find useful. At this meetup we will look at some of the latest challenges facing you who want to avoid poverty, starvation, homelessness, incarceration, or an unmarked grave, all because you were too lazy to protect yourself and your loved ones.
And because I am the eternal optimist and care about you, we'll also look at some of the best steps you can take to avoid Room 101, or worse, a life with a boot stamping on your face - forever.
