Biography of Mempa Youlha Tsering
Mempa (Doctor) Youlha Tsering came to the United States two years ago from his
home in Amdo, Tibet. He graduated from the Qinghai University Tibetan Medical College in 2003 after completing a five-year degree in Tibetan medicine. After graduation, Mempa Youlha practiced for a year in Lhasa at a clinic specializing in musculoskeletal injuries and disorders. He then traveled abroad and founded the Yuthog Clinic in Kathmandu, Nepal. During his stay in Nepal, he volunteered nearly a year of his time as a physician in one of the most remote areas of the country before traveling to India to continue advanced medical studies. His training and experiences have given him a deep knowledge of Tibetan herbs, Tibetan methods of diagnosis, physical therapies such as moxibustion and massage, and individualized diet and lifestyle needs. He also has a particular interest in merging Western and Tibetan psychology to more effectively address the mental health needs of his patients.
Mempa Youlha now resides in Asheville, NC, where he has opened the Menlha Tibetan Healing and Wellness Center. He endeavors to provide compassionate, whole-person care to all who walk through his door. Though his approach to medicine is largely
secular, his clinic shares space with Urban Dharma, a Tibetan Buddhist center
dedicated to building a more compassionate, connected community. Mempa Youlha
also serves patients at a part-time practice in Charlottesville, VA. A true
lifetime learner, Mempa Youlha is refining his Tibetan Kunye massage technique
through courses at the Shang-Shung Institute and is studying Western psychology
at a local college.
Mempa Youlha has had a life-long dream of acting as a bridge between cultures and between medical traditions. He has a solid foundation of Tibetan medical knowledge, but
he actively seeks out new ideas, new ways of understanding health, that will
allow him to best serve his patients.
Consultations with Mempa Youlha: consultations usually take an hour or more, and the
consultation fee is $40 ($10 of each fee goes to the TRTCC.) Herbs, if
appropriate, are $50 for a 2-week course of treatment. For some patients,
healing Kunye (Tibetan massage) or moxibustion may be part of the recommended
treatment. These sessions would be an additional half hour and $30 charge.
Pulse and urine analysis are important parts of diagnosis; to ensure accuracy,
patients should avoid alcohol, sour foods, and asparagus the evening prior to
their appointment. Please bring a small sample from your first urine in the
morning. For patients who are comfortable meditating, it is recommended to
meditate the evening and morning before coming for your appointment.
Ven. Khenpo Choephel is the resident lama at the Three Rivers Tibetan Cultural Center
(formerly Three Rivers Dharma); for his bio please visit our website.
Student/senior discounts of $10 off each event are available; other discounts
given upon request. All are welcome.
