Malibu Creek State Park to the M*A*S*H Site

Malibu Creek State Park to the M*A*S*H Site

Details

This is an easy, fun hike that is suitable for all members. We'll begin on a trailhead from Mulholland and end up at the site of the famous TV show MAS*H. Along the way we'll be hiking the well-traveled Grasslands Trail, Crags Road inside the park, and a narrow single-track trail that follows a stream.

Parking Note: If it's crowded at the intersection of Las Virgenes and Mulholland, you can park along Mulholland by pulling partially off the road, as many people do. TRY TO CARPOOL!!!

Length: 5 miles, out and backElevation Gain: Um....not a huge amount.Difficulty: Easy, but some climbing in middle and end.Dogs: No
Coyotes: YesRestroom: No

Highlights: In addition to the film site itself with rusting, abandoned vehicles from the irresponsible producers (just kidding about one part of that (which part is he talking about?)) and other attractions like the helicopter landing site, we'll take a tiny detour along the way to rest for a bit in the shade by the water. At this time of day the light will be excellent for photos and there are some magnificent views to enjoy.

Known Dangers: Rattlesnakes are always a risk during almost any hike. During the portion of the hike close to the stream, we may have to step around, on or in the shallow water itself and/or rocks and small boulders, which raises the potential for a slip-'n-fall. Tennis shoes would be a particularly bad idea for this reason. Hiking boots won't prevent a fall, but they will help. There may well be some poison oak on this section, too, so long pants are safer than shorts.

Even if it's hot this day it shouldn't be too bad given our start time, and certainly by the end of the hike it will be quite pleasant. Also, there is a lot of shade on this hike, but even so, bring plenty of water and a hat might be advisable. The photos below were taken by/of me on this hike.
