What we’re about
We are an inclusive and diverse group of people who enjoy sharing our love of exploring Oregon and southern Washington’s trails and byways with other like-minded folks. You’ll find experienced hikers and those who are new to hiking; young and finely-aged; single and coupled; fair-weather hikers and all-weather hikers; those who think nothing of doing a quick 15-mile Alpine loop and those whose idea of a good time is a gentle 4-mile stroll; birders, wildflower specialists, geologists, landscape photographers, and more. Everyone brings a unique perspective and their own special talents to the group in a spirit of camaraderie and sharing. Beginners, experts, locals, and new transplants are welcome. Join us in our next adventure.
Membership Rules: Members must post their real name and photo on their profile that shows their face - Not a flower, mountain or animated character (last name not required).
RSVP policy: If you sign up for any event, then decide you will not be going, you must update your RSVP to "Not Going". If you are a No-Show for an event, hike leaders may remove you from their hikes for up to 6 months. 2 no-shows and you may be removed for a year. It's very disrespectful to the hike leaders as well as other members to hold a spot on a hike and then not show up. Members with a pattern of late cancellations or signing up and cancelling frequently or holding spots for multiple hikes in other groups on the same day will also be removed from the group.*
Be considerate: Do not keep grabbing spots on most group hikes just because you can. Limiting yourself no more than 1-2 of PHMG hikes per week is a good practice. Be willing to give up your spot on hike that has a long waiting list, if you have already been on a hike with the group recently.
Show up on time.
Show up prepared: Read the entire hike description before signing up. Don't ask the hike leader to change the itinerary just to accommodate you.
The organizers of the PHMG put a high priority on the safety and comfort of our members. HIKERS WHO SHOW UP AT THE CARPOOLING SITE UNPREPARED AND/OR IMPROPERLY ATTIRED MAY BE TURNED AWAY AT THE HIKE LEADERS DISCRETION. This is a matter of safety; not just for you, but also for the entire group. If an unprepared or improperly attired hiker is injured or incapacitated then the safety of the group may be put at risk by having to stage a rescue.
While we appreciate feedback and constructive criticism about our hikes, rude, condescending comments or trying to stir up drama will not be tolerated and may result in your being removed from the group.
This is a group to meet friends for outdoor adventures. It is not a dating site. Not everyone in this group is single and looking for a partner. Anyone who sends inappropriate messages or causes others to feel uncomfortable or unsafe will be removed from the group.
This group exists due to countless hours spent by hike headers, and they are taking members on hikes for free. It is absolutely necessary you show respect and gratitude for their work, and their rules, or risk being banned from the group permanently. In addition, the group Organizer also has to pay Meetup fees every month. Be willing to give back in some way, and share responsibility of keeping the group going.
A hike leader can chose to remove anyone from his hike for any number of reason: not meeting fitness requirement, incomplete profile, history of showing inconsideration by signing up and cancelling frequently, showing negative attitude on a previous event, no-shows or leaving disrespectful comments. No one is entitled to a spot on a hike, solely because you are a member and managing to grab a spot every time.
Donations: While the membership is free, it cost money to run this group and makes hikes possible. Meetup fees plus other incidental charges are paid by the group's Organizer. We like to rely on small voluntary donations from those who join our group's hikes. If you have enjoyed a few hikes with the group, consider making a small donation (about $1 per hike attended, $5/year or $20/lifetime is a reasonable amount). You can pay to your hike leader, and he can pass on your donation the current Organizer. Every dollar ever collected in accounted for and the Organizer will be happy to share the details.
Liability Waiver: The leadership team assumes no liability since they are just volunteers. Every member is complete responsible for all their loss, damage, injuries, or all cost they incur while attending an event. Attending any event implies your complete acceptance of this liability waiver (link below)

See all- Otter Rock Surf + Chill Day Trip (Beginner Friendly)Gateway Transit Center, Portland, OR
The surf forecast looks good in Otter Rock this Sunday, and the weather looks warm and sunny, so let's go surfing!
The forecast looks perfect for beginners who want to try surfing for the first time or just hang out by the ocean with good company. Otter Rock is one of Oregon’s most beginner-friendly surf spots, known for its mellow waves, scenic cliffs, and relaxed, welcoming vibe. Whether you’re trying surfing for the first time or just want to hang out at the coast, this is the perfect chance to connect, play, and unwind together.
I’m a very new beginner myself — just starting to learn surfing. If you’re also learning, want to keep practicing your skills, or just want a chill beach day watching the waves (and us tumble around in them), come join me!
Surf Condition:
- Sunday’s forecast calls for gentle, beginner-friendly waves
- We’ll surf in the whitewater zone, close to shore — great for newer surfers!
- Wetsuit, board, and booties rentals available on site
- $45 for half day, $60 for full day
- Water will be cold — full wetsuits are a must (included in rental)
Note: Depending on interest, we’ll either book a lesson (if available) or surf independently. Prior surf experience is needed if no lesson is offered that day.
Trip Itinerary (Sunday Day Trip)

- 9:30 AM – Arrive at Pura Vida Surf Shop (gear rental / meet up spot)

- 2:30 PM – Chill at the beach, explore tide pools, or go hike the God's Thumb or Devils Punch Bowl Trail depends on the group interest
- 4:30 PM – Head back to Portland
- 7:00 PM – Arrive back in town
CARPOOLING: We will meet at Gateway Transit Center parking garage at 7:00 am for carpooling. People can also drive by themselves and meet at Pura Vida Surf Shop at 9:20 am. If carpooling, suggested payment of $10 each to the driver to share for car/gas/toll cost.

## Project Information:
This project is generously supported by funding from the State Forests Trust of Oregon. We’ll be removing branches and vegetation from the new trail’s path. We’ll use loppers and hand saws to clear shrubs and branches and digging tools to clear/transplant ferns. We’ll work at a comfortable pace and take lots of breaks. This event is open to volunteers of any experience level — all of the tools and techniques will be explained during the safety talk at the beginning of the day.
Hiking/driving information:
We’ll be hiking in about one half mile to our project area, but the ground is uneven since there’s no trail yet so keep that in mind. The drive to the trailhead includes one mile on gravel roads that are in fair condition. There are large potholes that are avoidable and one dip that can be navigated by most small cars.
You should plan to participate in this trail party for its entirety. If you need to leave early, please contact the crew leader beforehand (their contact information will be sent out 48 hours before the event).Carpool: If you wish to carpool, meet me at Golden Valley parking lot by US26 at 7:30 am. Otherwise you can meet at the meeting point of the event at Idiot Creek Loop Road.
Event details:
Detailed event information, including directions to the precise meeting location, will be provided to registrants via email 48 hours prior to the event. If you’re volunteering for the first time, read this blog by a volunteer to know what to expect at your first trail party. What to bring:
