Sunset hike-PittockMansion to Stone House+ (4ish miles, 650+ elv gain out&back)
Details
Make sure you check here again earlier on the day, in case we need to adjust the starting time a tiny bit earlier based on the sunset time on the day.
Free event but suggested donation $1 is appreciated (you can bring a dollar cash and give to event host). Event host will pass to Portland Hiking Group organizer towards expenses that makes Portland Hiking Group exist. (donation of $5 good for a year. $20 good for lifetime).
Below is the trail but we start from the top and walk down then back up to watch the sunset view.

You can park into the top parking lot. there is a $2/hour until 8pm fee collected at the machine. ... or you can park before you reach the top, a couple areas you can see that there is obvious extra space on your right hand side.
Whoever parks on top the parking lot, needs to drive your car out of the lot by 9pm... certain park ranger can be restrict and give ticket at 9pm.
We meet on top of Pittock Mansion at 5:45pm (so budget to arrive at 5:35 or even 5:30) so you have time to find parking), the view point where you can see the event profile pic view, and get a group pic. We follow Wildwood Trail down to Cornel Rd parking lot, continue on Lower MaCleay trail. We will reach the Stone house, take a group picture there, if time allows, we can walk more, otherwise turn around, we want be back on top a bit before sunset time for the sunset view of the city and hopefully Mt Hood. get the last group pic with the city and hopefully Mt Hood in the golden sunset lights. So different !
Restrooms on top, and portable toilet at Cornel Rd.
Hiking shoes are highly suggested simply because the grib is much better.
- Poles are optional but they are good for upper body exercise anyway. (the Lower Mcleay trail does not have much elevation at all. but the Cornel Rd to Pittock Mansion part has quite some elevation so you might find the poles are useful for that part).
- Bring water (12+ oz since it does have some hills at the upper part) + light snack (on top there is picnic table and ample grass area) + bring extra to share if you have the ability to carry.
- Bright clothes are cheerful and good for pictures. White reflects ligths well, good for the walk downhills in case it gets dark already.
- Bring your head lamp if you have one, just in case.
Make sure you post message on event page if you will be late or last min cancellation, so other people are aware.
